Terminology
In Shopify, some products are sold as a single item, and others in several versions, such as sizes, formats, editions or bundles. Those versions are called variants. The app supports both, and changes its wording to match whichever one you're looking at.
The three words you'll see
| What you're looking at | What the app calls it |
|---|---|
| A product sold as a single item, with no variants of its own | Product |
| One version of a product that has several variants | Variant |
| Several items at once, where one word wouldn't fit them all | Product/Variant |
Why the wording changes
For a product with no variants, that item is the product, so calling it a "variant" would be confusing. For a product sold in several versions, the item is one of those versions, so calling it a "product" would be misleading: the other versions aren't affected by what you're doing.
For example, on a single-item product the actions read Delete Product and Enable Product. On one version of a multi-variant product, the same actions read Delete Variant and Enable Variant, a reminder that the product's other variants are untouched.
Why you'll sometimes see "Product/Variant"
Some views cover several items at once. A piece of content, for instance, can be linked to single-item products and individual variants at the same time. Rather than guess and get it wrong for half of them, the app says Product/Variant whenever a label covers both.
